AB 1405, co-sponsored by the Ella Baker Center, just passed the Legislature and now awaits Governor Schwarzenegger's signature. The first bill of its kind would create a fund for communities most impacted by pollution and unemployment. Our Green Collar Jobs Campaign has tirelessly campaigned to assist this bill in passing.
In a follow up study to the Toxic Twins report released on August 10th, the Ella Baker Center and California Environmental Justice Alliance explore the impact of Texas oil companies Tesoro and Valero in Southern CA. Both companies operate large refineries in the south Los Angeles community of Wilmington, where 85 percent of the population is Latino/a and nearly a quarter of all families live below the poverty level.
