Calling it a “step backwards for California’s children and communities,” the Children’s Defense Fund joins the Ella Baker Center in taking a strong stand against Proposition 6. One of the most harmful provisions of Prop 6 is to try more children as adults — even though studies show that children’s brains are different and that outcomes for youth in adult prison are even worse than those that go to juvenile hall. In their own words:
Proposition 6, an initiative on the California ballot this November, is a misguided and costly effort to increase funds for law enforcement and prisons at the expense of children and their communities. Falsely touted by proponents as the “Safe Neighborhoods Act”, Prop 6 re-writes or adds more than 50 criminal laws and statutes in order to criminalize children at younger ages and unfairly target at-risk youth. Instead of investing in evidence-based strategies to reduce crime, Prop 6 takes California communities in the wrong direction by increasing the arrest and incarceration of at-risk youth who are then less likely to stay in school and become productive citizens. If passed, Prop 6 would put more children behind bars and spend billions of tax-payer dollars on programs that are not proven to make neighborhoods safer.
We welcome the Children’s Defense Fund to the broad coalition — including firefighters, teachers, community groups and law enforcement — opposing Proposition 6. Learn more about Prop 6 at VoteNoProp6.com, and read the Children’s Defense Fund’s full statement against it.

PROTECT THE YOUTH, THEY ARE OUR FUTURE!
We are having a rally/press conference on Tuesday October 21 at noon at the Monterey county courthouse at 240 Church St Salinas to vote NO on 6 and 9.
Salinas has had 20 gang related killings so far this year and is in “surge” mode against gangs. These two propositions are seen by some as helping the gang problem. Do you know Ella Baker supporters in Monterey county that would like to know about this event/ and our No on 6 and 9 effort?

Dear Ella Friends,
The law makers need to improve on legal statutes and policies. It is important to strengthen community policy and governance at all levels and get children informed of legal rights.
The Kanya land act 286,states that the least land sub-devision should not exceed one acre, bu does not state the larges land parcel to owned by one individual. The same act gives the land minister power to authorize land demarcation and allotment to whom he wills.
As a result of unfair land policy, there is high level of land grabbing. The rich have unused large parts of the earth while the poor are rendered landless.
The country has over 1,000 internally displaced people who include last year’s violence orphans.
The recorded number of gang rape cases affecting women include 400. cases, who were raped during political violence related to social economic deprivation.
Rape cases records for 2008 rate as high as 5,680. They affect children as young as three years ol who end up dead.
Partnership for sustainable solution within ‘Secure Women Settlement’ is crucial.
It is important to campaign for equitable land distribution, and strengthen Women and Children’s Rights. It is also crucial to to introduce “Safe Neighbourhood Act” in the country, that contributes to development of G1&G2.
Keep the fire burning against books no bars.
Grace.

Ya especially the original first Real American Residents of Oakland, that are still discriminated and got unsupported when gentification happened and they let the well off rich whites and illegal spandiards come here and take their jobs and home. In the fair world the African American LGBT would be acknowledged and supported 24/7 because they are the original residents that are STILL waiting for their rights while everyone eles automatically get them.
RJ… Baloney! What does all that have to do with the children and Prop 6?! Get over it and get with the issue at hand! The children!
Thank you for the good information
