Lifecasting: Joyce Cook, Books Not Bars Organizer

Our very own Joyce Cook is participating in the Equal Voices for America’s Families Lifecasting Across the Digital Divide project. Each week, she records a new video and adds it to her page, chronicling the life of a mother working to reform California’s youth prison system. Follow Joyce as she reflects on the political process, talks about life in Richmond, and shares Books Not Bars victories.

Every Tuesday, Equal Voices will post a new video from Joyce on its blog. You can see all of Joyce’s videos on her own video page. She’s also been featured on the Huffington Post.

Here’s a sample video:

Thank you Joyce, at the end of the day, or the year we need to pull up off the planet and take a birds eye view of our life, family, community, society. If what we see is not pleasing and good for all then it up to us to take responsibility and start a change the very next morning. If not us who. I like you here the call for change and have responded in action. I’m not greet on this computer but I talk very well feel free to contact me and we can exchange numbers. I moved my son Kwadjo Tillman now 15 and myself to a unknown place called Fair field Iowa. I a sustainable living advocate and life coach, this place is very sustainable conscious that is how the universe, God got my interest to move here. I’ve been working on a nonprofit for women Called ” Many Shades Of Sisterhood” out of it I’m birthing a women’s national co-op. I’d like to share some Ideal with you about it. Alot of aspects of my action were seeded from when I lived in the bay area 84-87. My spirit still holds dear to alot I got from those years and people I was bless to know and those that made it possible I never knew. Be blessed & stay true, Mama Lynne msosisterhood@gmail.com.

Well said – and this project is cool. I like the way you turned around the criticism that there weren’t any specifics – into the specifics of your life and children’s lives. Best wishes for your good work.

It’s only been a few seconds since I sent her a message proposing a deadline for her interview answers, and up until this point there’s generally been a day or two between replies. As a result, I’m a single click away from logging out of my webmail client and switching off the computer.

Instead, I open up her email, where I’m greeted by her shortest message ihale to me yet. It contains just four words.
