Today marks 100 days since the Deepwater oil spill broke open in the Gulf of Mexico. My thoughts and prayers go out to the countless families whose livelihoods and way of life are being smothered by oil that should have remained deep underground. This tragedy is unfolding at a devastating scale, and will hurt families, fisheries and delicate ecosystems for decades to come.
We are also just about 100 days (97 to be exact) from Election Day on November 2. And in California, we are facing a different kind of threat from dirty oil. Namely, proposition 23 – the Dirty Energy Proposition. Instead of using their massive profits to help c
lean up the Gulf, greedy Texas oil companies are pouring millions into a campaign to protect their toxic, polluting oil refineries in California.
Today is a fitting day for this story on SF.StreetsBlog.org. As the article reports, Communities United Against the Dirty Energy Prop is moving ahead full force.
Communities of color have the most to lose from Prop 23. And without the votes of people of color, we will all lose against Prop 23 in November. Keep an eye on www.CommunitiesAgainstProp23.com- our new website is coming soon! In the meantime, make sure your friends and family know about Proposition 23 and will be voting NO this November so that we can prevent our own oil-company fueled disaster right here in California. And, if you are in Northern California, join us next week for a Communities United meet and greet and media training to ramp up our efforts to Stop Prop 23.
