RE: AB 1300 (Price) -- Family Connection and Young Offender Rehabilitation Act

I write to urge your support for AB 1300 (Price). AB 1300 reduces recidivism and increases public safety by encouraging communication among young people in the Division of Juvenile Justice ("DJJ"), their families and clergy. Studies consistently show that family contact while incarcerated greatly increases a child's chances of success upon release.

Families express continual frustration with DJJ's bureaucratic roadblocks and the exorbitant costs of maintaining contact with children behind prison walls. These barriers not only undermine rehabilitative efforts, but also contribute to deep depression inside DJJ prisons, leading to numerous suicide attempts.

AB 1300 will help reduce recidivism by encouraging the family and social networks that youth need when they come home. This bill will facilitate communication between young people and their families as well as increase public safety.

I strongly support AB 1300 and respectfully urge your "aye" vote. Thank you for your work.
