Interning at the Ella Baker Center for Human Rights

Thank you for considering an internship with Ella Baker Center. Interns and volunteers make our work possible and we're honored that you're considering working with us. In order to make the internship experience more rewarding and to help us integrate interns into our work, we have a few guidelines for you to follow when applying.

Current Openings:

Sustainability Intern

The Sustainability Intern for the Ella Baker Center will be in charge of researching, writing and developing a detailed proposal for ways of making the Ella Baker Center offices more energy efficient and environmentally friendly. The Sustainability Intern will be responsible for conducting a financial and environmental analysis to support their proposals for ways to "green" the Ella Baker Center. Upon receiving approval from the Director of Operations and Finance, the Intern would then be responsible for implementing the changes for training the staff on maintaining these improvements.

Special Event Intern

The Ella Baker Center seeks a part-time Special Event Intern (10-15 hours/week, possibly up to 20 hours in the first two weeks in October) to assist our dynamic Development team in the implementation and close out of our annual event on October 14, 2010. The duration of the internship is five months, beginning August 16, 2010 and ending December 17.

Essential Functions
The ideal candidate will be an enthusiastic and self-motivated team-player with experience or interest in planning events and working with volunteers. Additional requirements include:

  • Provide good communication with committee volunteers, solicited sponsors and secured sponsors by email and phone
  • Coordinate logistics with event vendors (ie., venue, caterer, printer, etc)
  • Coordinate pick up of event-related items
  • Coordinate volunteer needs for night of event
  • Confirm performers and VIPs for event
  • Coordinate collateral needs, such as invitation, program, signage
  • Maintain accurate guest list and sponsor guest lists
  • Help promote event through social media outlets, online media, etc.
  • Have some familiarity with development database or aptitude for learning online database system
  • Send development correspondence and gift acknowledgments related to event (pre- and post-event)
  • Assist Development Assistant in reconciliation of event gifts with accounting staff
  • Attend and participate in bi-weekly development team meetings
  • Other tasks to support the event as needed
  • Maintain complete event files in anticipation of 2011 event

Desired Skills and Qualities

  • Some event planning experience
  • Some computer and database experience helpful
  • Ability to communicate well

  • Passion for Ella Baker Center mission
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel

Physical Activity Requirements
This intern position requires frequent computer use and some lifting of up to 30 pounds. The intern must be willing and available to attend the annual event on October 14, 2010, from 3pm - 11pm.

Organizing Intern, Soul of the City Campaign

This is a 15-hour/week position at the Ella Baker Center in Oakland.

Key Responsibilities

Administrative

  • Maintain database of volunteers and potential volunteers
  • Recruit and retain volunteers for the 2010 Fall Civic Engagement Campaign
  • Take notes at meetings with allies and Ella Baker Center staff.
  • Respond to inquiries from the general public.
  • Provide support in event planning
  • Write blog entries for Ella’s Voice

Events & Outreach

  • Coordinate logistics for events under the Direction of the Campaign Director and Campaign Associate, (i.e., secure venues, arrange for catering, work with venue staff, respond to participant needs, etc.) for Campaign-sponsored events which include
    • Mixers
    • Community Service projects
    • Events in support of statewide and local ballot initiative and electoral campaigns
  • Evaluate opportunities for tabling or speaking at non-EBC-sponsored events and assist with scheduling, staffing, or coordinating volunteers to participate.

Fall Internship Positions

Green Collar Jobs Organizing Intern

We are looking for a motivated and talented Organizing Intern who will help advocate for "green-collar" job opportunities in Oakland and the Bay Area. The intern will assist in running local campaigns and initiatives, in organizing events and in building networks that unite diverse. cross-sector constituencies (including organized labor, environmental organizations, community/social justice organizations and green business).

Sample of Key Responsibility:
Help convene the Oakland Climate Action Coalition, an alliance of business, labor, social justice and environmental groups to advocate a just climate solution for Oakland. The Oakland Climate Action Coalition pushed for and won some of the strongest Green House Gas emission goals of any city in the country. The OCAC is now working to finalize their policy recommendations for equitable climate action in Oakland. These policies will be voted on by City Council in 2010 as part of Oakland's Energy and Climate Action Plan.

Internship position is 20-40 hours/week and is 3-6 months long. (40 hrs/wk is ideal)

Green-Collar Jobs Policy Intern

The Green-Collar Jobs Campaign is helping build California's movement for a green-collar economy that truly provides opportunity for all. We advocate for the creation of "green-collar" jobs (quality, career-track, skilled, hands-on jobs in industries like renewable energy, water and energy efficiency, green building, habitat restoration, sustainable agriculture, and more), especially for low-income communities and communities of color.

We have an internship position open for someone who is committed to social and economic justice for low-income communities and communities of color. Strong administrative, computer and people skills are desired, along with an environmental background. The position can be part-time but full-time is preferred. This internship offers a unique opportunity to work with leading climate policy makers and social justice advocates within state of California.

Internship position is 20-40 hours/week and 3-6 months long. (40 hrs/wk is ideal)

Internship is available year-round and we accept applications on a rolling basis.

Communications and Social Media Intern

Under the direction of the Director of Communication Strategy, the Communications and Social Media Intern is responsible for:

  • Building and monitoring the presence of the Ella Baker Center on Web 2.0 sites such as Facebook, Twitter, You Tube etc.;
  • Updating and interfacing with the Ella Baker Center entry on Wikipedia;
  • Assisting in the creation and editing of content for the Ella Baker Center blog and external blogs where we are contributors;
  • Helping develop and refine the overall organizational strategy for social media
  • And, delegated duties, tasks and projects as needed and assigned by the Director of Communications Strategies, Online Communications Director, or Media Relations Manager

What We’re Looking For:

  • Literacy in a range of social media platforms
  • Excellent time management skills
  • Strong writing and research skills

Requirements:

  • All intern positions are unpaid. It is best to secure fellowships or alternative sources of financial support when considering an internship with the Ella Baker Center.
  • Education:
    • Junior or senior year of undergraduate program
    • Enrolled in Master's or Ph.D. program
    • Law or Business School students
    • Recent graduates
    • Individuals with an interest and/or background in our work
  • 30 - 40 hours per week
  • Duration: 3 - 12 months

Heal the Streets Intern

This intern position will help the Heal the Streets Director manage and grow the Heal the Streets program. Learn more about Heal the Streets.

Intern Duties may include but are not limited too:

  • Help co-facilitate, design and implement focus groups, workshops and other participatory research projects with the HTS fellows;
  • Produce monthly reports on the research you’ve done on the issue of violence prevention in the form of a publishable research paper, blog, or outreach email;
  • Communicate and network with local public officials, community leaders and other youth serving organizations in the area
  • General administrative duties when necessary;
  • Attend all Ella Baker Center events, training and mixers;
  • Represent EBC at job fairs, resource fairs or community events;
  • Assist Program Coordinator with program duties as needed.
  • Attend all HTS team meetings and monthly trainings. Team meetings are Mondays from 4:30 -6:30 p.m. during the school year.
  • Monthly trainings are to be announced. (May 14, 15, & June 18, 19)
