Soul of the City at E.C. Reems Academy
On October 17, 2009, Soul of the City joined forces with Oakland Food Connection and Bay Localize to revamp and extend the rooftop garden at E.C. Reems Academy in East Oakland. Back in 2007, the Ella Baker Center helped Oakland Food Connection and E.C. Reems Academy of Technology and Art celebrate the Bay Area's first green rooftop school garden.
Now, thanks to the hard work, sweat and dedication of the Soul of the City members, the rooftop garden E.C. Reems is now ready for the fall planting season. It will continue to provide not just nutritious vegetables for the students, but also a deeper understanding of how food is grown, and a sense of their own ability to grow it themselves.
