Take the Oakland Apollo Challenge for Good Jobs and Energy Independence!

In 1961, President John Kennedy challenged our nation to do the impossible — to send a man to the moon and return him safely to earth in just ten years. In 1969, Apollo 11 did just that.

Today, in the same bold fashion, we are challenging Oakland to create thousands of well-paid jobs and take one giant leap towards energy independence in a single decade.

The Oakland Apollo Alliance believes that Oakland can become a shining national example of a blue-collar becoming a green-collar powerhouse. Oakland can be a model of sustainability, creating high quality jobs for its residents while cleaning up the environment, improving public health and helping America achieve energy independence.

Join us in challenging Oakland's leaders to:

1. Kick the Oil Habit:

Reduce Oakland's oil consumption by promoting clean, renewable fuel alternatives, efficient vehicle technologies and mass transit. • Implement policies and programs that prioritize local, renewable fuel production and good jobs in this sector. • Make city government operations 100% oil-free.

2. Harness Clean, Homegrown Renewable Energy:

Get 100% of our electricity from clean, renewable sources through policies and programs that prioritize local, renewable energy generation projects, workforce development and good jobs.

3. Save Energy with High Performance Buildings:

Retrofit all public buildings. • Require efficient, green construction practices in all new buildings, public and private. • Provide building owners with incentives to pursue energy efficiency — and assistance in doing so. • Provide job training and good career opportunities in green construction for Oakland residents.

4. Green the Port of Oakland

Improve energy efficiency, reduce diesel emissions and enhance the health of workers and residents by investing in renewable energy (e.g., wind, solar, clean alternative fuels). • Create jobs and increase the Port’s economic output by becoming more energy efficient and energy independent.

5. Create Green-Collar Jobs in Oakland:

Support and attract green industries and businesses to Oakland by offering incentives, reducing red tape and providing a top-notch trained workforce. • Support and expand existing green enterprise. • Increase demand for green services and products through City policies and programs. • Invest in job training and apprenticeship programs in renewable energy and energy efficiency occupations, especially for unemployed and underemployed residents. • Use the growing green economy to provide living-wage and union jobs and to help lift people out of poverty.

I support the Apollo Challenge for Oakland, so that we can grow our economy, create new jobs for our residents, protect public health, and improve the environment!
