Some Good News From California’s Justice System
January 15, 2012 — In the last decade, California has closed 8 of its 11 juvenile facilities and successfully turned responsibility for holding and treating nonviolent offenders over to the counties, where they can have more contact with their families and their chances for a smooth reintegration after release are higher. Governor Proposes to Shut Down DJJ
January 6, 2012 — Today, Governor Brown proposed to close the Division of Juvenile Justice (DJJ) youth prisons. Brown’s 2012-2013 budget proposes that the DJJ stop taking youth beginning in 2013, eventually eliminating the state’s three remaining youth prisons. [Read More]

The Center for Public Integrity: iWatch News (January 25, 2012) — California, often a trendsetter, could make history if it approves Gov. Jerry Brown’s bid to close all state-run youth prisons and eliminate its state Division of Juvenile Justice.

(January 12, 2012) — The LA County Board of Supervisors is due to vote this month on approving Baca’s application. But groups like the Ella Baker Center for Human Rights, the Youth Justice Coalition, and Californians United for a Responsible Budget, are collecting signatures to petition the County Board of Supervisors to vote against the deal.

Daily News, Los Angeles (August 22, 2011) — Before my son got locked up, he was healthy. Being locked up for more than 21 hours and sometimes more than 23 hours a day made my son sick. He is physically deteriorating. His speech is slower and he seems distant now.
